Narrator Studio: Overview

Creating Content

Educators can select from a range of ready-to-play public domain works on the Hey Mac Software website, or create their own Narrator books and stories using Narrator Studio. Synching of audiobooks and digital text is accomplished through the easy-to-use Narrator Studio interface. Narrator Studio also enables users to upload their content to a specific desktop computer or mobile device; or alternatively, to the Hey Mac Software server for general public distribution*.

Creating Original Narrator Content

• Record your story using your computer's built-in capabilities or low-cost podcasting equipment
• Edit the audio and break longer stories into chapters using GarageBand (free on Macs) or other low-cost tools such as WireTap Studio (see recording/editing tips at heymacsoftware.com)
• Layout text in Pages or Word using Narrator template
• Cut and paste your text file into Narrator Studio
• Import the audio file into Narrator Studio: all common audio formats are supported
• Synch the text with the audio by tapping the space bar at the end of each page
• Make any corrections to the text inside Narrator Studio
• Save and synch more chapters or upload file to a Mac or iPod Touch/iPhone

Creating Out-of Copyright Content

• Search for digital text at gutenberg.org
• Search for the audiobook at booksshouldbefree.com, librivox.org, etc.
• Import files into Narrator Studio

Creating Copyrighted Content

• Have your purchaser contact the distributer/publisher of the book about obtaining a license for the digital version of the text, and an audiobook (DRM-free file) if one exists
• Alternatively, visit www.copyright.com/academic to apply for a one-time or annual license of electronic text and audio (if available)
• If no audiobook is available, consider making your own recording (possibly while reading to students) or make this a class project
• Import files into Narrator Studio
